TYPES OF COMMUNICATION
Everybody working in an office knows these types of people who use different types of office communication. There is the “chatty” one, who would pass by your table with a coffee cup in his hand and ask for the specific document in person. There is the “call” guy, often wearing a headset instead of using an ordinary phone and always stepping out of the meeting because the phone is ringing. And there is the “typewriter”, who prefers to work closely with his keyboard. Each of these have their qualities and we can all find parts of ourselves in one of them. But ideally, we are all a mix of all three.
WORK HAPPENS EVERYWHERE
Especially nowadays, where our office is more a charging station rather than our permanent job place: work happens everywhere and it is extremely important to be flexible in our ways of communicating. We are writing emails by spending a day of home office in our garden because the plumber can only come between 1 and 3 pm, we call our business partner in the taxi on our way to an appointment in another part of the town, and we finish our presentation while waiting at the airport for the plane to take off.

THE GOOD OLD TIMES
Let’s take a closer look on how our communication evolved during the centuries. We won’t start with cave paintings and hieroglyphics, but let’s just mention for the moment that there are about 7000 languages spoken word wide, and that the telephone was invented in 1860 by Italian inventor Antonio Meucci (better known through the patent of Alexander Graham Bell). A hundred years later already a 100 million phone lines were in service and in 1995 Voice over Internet Protocol was born. The evolution of written communication is not less impressive. With the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century, first newspapers got published in 1609. A hundred years later the first typewriter followed.
First emails were sent in 1971, and since the late 1980s you cannot imagine an office without computers. The evolution continues and in the past years the mobile office gets the more and more important. Companies need to offer mobile solution in order to facilitate work for their employees. Since at least most teams work in an international surrounding and need to keep in touch globally with their clients and suppliers, a mobile office gets essential.
